Building a Legacy in Precast Concrete

View in E-mag

Tri-Kon Precast Concrete Products Ltd. has grown from a family-run construction service business into a regional precast concrete manufacturer serving projects across British Columbia, Alberta, and Canada. Based in Cranbrook, in British Columbia’s East Kootenay region, the company has built its reputation around quality, safety, and the continuity of family ownership.

The company’s roots date back to 1972, when Chris Kostiuk’s grandfather began working in underground construction and started producing his own septic products and manholes for installation. “He started building his own septic products and manholes to install them himself, and then it just grew from there,” said Kostiuk, one of the company’s owners. What began as a practical response to project needs gradually developed into a broader precast operation, one that now supplies products for underground, highway, forestry, and bridge projects.

Today, Tri-Kon’s work spans a wide range of precast concrete applications. “Basically anything to do with precast concrete,” Kostiuk said. Over time, the company has moved from smaller septic tank work into larger infrastructure products, including highway barriers, manholes, bridges, and box culverts. Its CPCQA certification has further supported that expansion, allowing the business to take on more complex and demanding work.

For Kostiuk, that evolution represents one of the company’s most important milestones. Taking Tri-Kon from a small business focused on septic products to a certified precast supplier capable of supporting major infrastructure projects has reflected both technical growth and long-term commitment. As the team explained, “What started as a local endeavour has blossomed into a regional force. Tri-Kon Precast’s influence spans BC, Alberta, and Canada.”

That growth has been driven by a consistent focus on reliability and quality. The company’s family-owned structure remains central to its identity, giving its leadership a direct investment in each product and project. “We’ve been doing it for so long that it just comes naturally now,” Kostiuk said. For the team, that experience has become part of the company’s operating culture, shaping how it approaches both production and customer relationships.

Recent projects reflect the scale and importance of Tri-Kon’s work within the infrastructure market. On Highway 1 in Glacier National Park, the company completed a project that combined a river crossing with an animal crossing. The structure allowed wildlife to pass safely while avoiding the river below, integrating environmental considerations into a practical infrastructure solution. “It’s like killing two birds with one stone kind of thing,” Kostiuk said.

The company also worked on the Highway 93 North Parks Canada Rampart Creek culvert replacement, replacing existing culverts used to manage runoff from the Rocky Mountains and the national park. Projects of this nature require not only durable precast products, but also a clear understanding of the environmental and operational conditions in which those products will perform.

Across its work, Tri-Kon places strong emphasis on quality control and certification. “Keeping certified and quality control definitely helps,” Kostiuk said. “Being a family business helps as well because the owners are invested. We’re just striving to have a good product for customers, and quality control is a big thing.” That approach is reflected in the company’s broader philosophy, with each product carrying the Tri-Kon name expected to represent precision, durability, and consistent standards.

“Being a family business helps as well because the owners are invested. We’re striving to have a good product for customers, and quality control is a big thing.”

Health and safety are equally central to the company’s operations. For Tri-Kon, safety is not treated as a formality or a requirement to be met after the fact. It is built into the company’s daily work and long-term culture. “At Tri-Kon Precast Concrete Products, our unwavering commitment to health and safety is at the forefront of our organizational values,” the team said. “We conduct our operations with a steadfast dedication to ensuring the well-being of our team and cultivating a safe working environment.”

That commitment is supported through rigorous training programs, modern equipment, transparent communication, and ongoing assessment. The company views safety as a continuous process rather than a fixed achievement. “Safety is an ongoing journey, not a destination,” the team said. “At Tri-Kon, we are dedicated to a culture of continuous improvement.” By regularly reviewing procedures and responding to feedback, the company works to identify areas for improvement and strengthen its safety practices over time.

This approach is reinforced by accountability across the organization. Management promotes safety awareness, while employees are expected to take responsibility for their role in maintaining a safe workplace. The company also emphasizes compliance with federal, provincial, and local workplace regulations. Where unsafe conditions or practices arise, immediate action is taken to correct or isolate the issue.

For Tri-Kon, safety, quality, and productivity are connected rather than separate priorities. “Our commitment to health and safety is not just a statement; it is a living philosophy,” the team said. “We operate under the belief that quality, safety, and productivity are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.” This perspective reflects the company’s broader belief that strong internal standards support stronger outcomes for clients.

Another important part of the company’s development has been its membership in the Canadian Concrete Pipe & Precast Association. Tri-Kon has been a member of the CCPPA for a number of years, and the relationship has supported partnerships, industry knowledge, and ongoing development. For a company operating across a specialized segment of construction, that connection provides access to wider expertise while reinforcing its commitment to recognized standards.

As Tri-Kon looks ahead, the company is focused on steady growth across British Columbia and Alberta while continuing to maintain its customer relationships. Although sales were down in 2025, Kostiuk said the business has “quite a bit of work coming up in different locations across BC and Alberta,” with a focus on “steady growth of different products and keeping customers happy.”

More than 50 years after its founding, Tri-Kon Precast Concrete Products Ltd. continues to operate with the same family-owned foundation that shaped its earliest years. Through a combination of quality control, safety, certification, and long-term experience, the company has built a regional presence in precast concrete while maintaining the practical values that first defined the business.
