Leadership Earned on Site

View in E-mag

In commercial construction, credibility is rarely granted by title. It is earned on site, through repetition, accountability, and an understanding of what it actually takes to deliver work under pressure. Brian Costigan’s career reflects that reality. His path from apprentice to company leader was not accelerated or abstracted; it was built deliberately, through years spent learning the trade, understanding the field, and earning the trust of the people around him.

Costigan began working on site at just 16 years old. By 18, he had obtained his NYCDCC card and was fully immersed in the realities of construction long before executive responsibility entered the picture. Those early years shaped his understanding of the work at its most fundamental level. They also shaped his leadership philosophy. Respect for the craft, respect for the workforce, and respect for the standards that define quality were not learned later; they were formed early, in the field.

After completing his education at Marist College, Costigan joined Rivco full time and continued to build his career from the ground up. He started as an apprentice, progressing through the ranks by combining technical knowledge with a strong work ethic and a clear ability to problem-solve in real conditions. Advancement came through performance, not position. Each step forward was earned, reinforcing a culture that values experience, accountability, and practical decision-making.

That progression matters. In an industry where leadership can sometimes become detached from execution, Costigan’s firsthand experience remains central to how Rivco operates. His understanding of sequencing, coordination, and the pressures of active commercial environments allows him to lead with credibility. Teams know their leadership understands the work because he has done it. That connection continues to shape Rivco’s culture today.

In 2019, Costigan assumed leadership of Rivco at a pivotal moment for the company. The business was well established, with a strong reputation built over decades, but the commercial construction landscape was evolving. Schedules were tightening, specifications were becoming more exacting, and clients were increasingly demanding partners who could deliver reliably under compressed timelines.

Under Costigan’s direction, Rivco entered a period of measured but significant growth. The company expanded in both personnel and revenue, scaling operations while maintaining the craftsmanship and accountability that defined its earlier years. Growth was not pursued for its own sake. Instead, it was aligned with capability, workforce strength, and the ability to maintain control in the field.

“Growth was not pursued for its own sake. Instead, it was aligned with capability, workforce strength, and the ability to maintain control in the field.”

Recognizing shifts in market demand, Costigan also led an expansion of Rivco’s service offerings. By strategically bringing additional trades under the company’s umbrella, Rivco positioned itself as a more comprehensive interior construction partner. That evolution allowed the firm to respond more effectively to client needs while maintaining tighter coordination across scopes.

Rivco Construction’s identity, however, extends beyond leadership alone. A second-generation, family-owned firm with more than 35 years of experience, Rivco has built its reputation on execution. In today’s commercial construction environment, that distinction matters. Interiors work often unfolds under intense scrutiny, in active buildings where coordination across trades, sequencing, and schedule awareness determines success.

Rivco specializes in complex drywall systems, acoustical installations, carpentry, taping and finishing, and painting. These disciplines are highly interdependent. They require technical precision, strong planning, and constant communication between crews. Mistakes are visible. Delays compound quickly. Rivco’s long-standing success in these areas reflects an operational mindset built around pre-planning and field-level accountability.

The company’s project portfolio spans a broad range of sectors, including Financial Services, Entertainment, Hospitality, Broadcasting, Legal, Media, Advertising, Health Care, and Fashion. While these industries differ in function and pace, they share a common expectation: work must be delivered accurately, on schedule, and to specification. Rivco’s repeat client relationships across these sectors reflect its ability to meet those expectations consistently.

What differentiates Rivco in a crowded interiors marketplace is not scale alone, but approach. Leadership remains actively involved throughout the construction process, from early planning through closeout. This hands-on involvement supports quality control, responsiveness, and alignment with project goals. It also reinforces a culture where issues are addressed directly, rather than deferred or obscured.

Pre-planning plays a central role in Rivco’s delivery model. By investing time upfront to understand sequencing, constraints, and coordination requirements, the company reduces risk later in the process. That discipline allows Rivco to operate effectively in active commercial environments, where interior work often must proceed alongside occupied spaces, parallel trades, and fixed deadlines.

The firm’s emphasis on accountability is equally important. Field teams are empowered to take ownership of their work, supported by leadership that understands the realities they face. This structure fosters trust internally and externally. Clients know that Rivco’s teams are aligned, informed, and capable of responding quickly when conditions change.

Rivco approaches each project as a partnership rather than a transaction. That philosophy aligns closely with Costigan’s leadership journey. Just as his career progressed through earned experience and long-term commitment, Rivco’s client relationships are built over time through reliability and performance. The focus is not on a single project, but on consistent delivery across many.

This long-term perspective has allowed Rivco to grow while maintaining its core values. Expansion has not diluted the company’s standards or culture. Instead, it has reinforced the importance of discipline, integrity, and respect for the craft. Those principles guide both leadership decisions and field execution.

Today, Brian Costigan continues to guide Rivco with the same mindset that defined his early career. Discipline remains central. Integrity shapes decision-making. Growth is pursued deliberately, with an understanding that scale must be supported by capability. His journey from apprentice to company leader mirrors Rivco’s own evolution: steady, earned, and grounded in experience.

In an industry where execution defines reputation, Rivco Construction continues to build from the inside out. Through skilled labor, hands-on leadership, and a commitment to craftsmanship, the company delivers interiors that perform as designed and stand the test of time. For clients operating in demanding commercial environments, Rivco remains a proven partner—one shaped by experience, guided by discipline, and led by someone who has earned every step forward.
